Apparent hop bitterness is way out of whack, tastes like an IPA and I just haven't got the zing from the mega-dry hopping that I expected. Bottom line, a very nicely brewed IPA but certainly not an Epic Pale Ale clone for my attempt.

Re: Brew #27 – Epic Pale Ale (sorta) clone

so how'd it come out?

Re: 12 months, 12 Beers, 12 Lessons Learned

Loved your review!!

Re: Campbells Classic Rutherglen Tokay – Liquid Gold

I have a passing interest in stickies. I'd only just moved up the mountain two months prior to the fire and really didn't know all the areas, thought Wonga a very exotic name and that's why I recall them. Had been living in Geelong in a motorhome after the sad end to a fantastic life on the road, partner being killed in a freak accident in Alice Springs, so was pretty much doubly traumatized after the fires. Love the mountains and where I live but am still nervy when it's a hot windy day. Humour wins me over every time and it's the reason I remembered the crew, especially so when sometimes I could not remember what happened five minutes earlier. Hopefully it's all part of the awful trauma and not just encroaching old age, that's enough of a bitch in itself.
Once again thanks very much for your words and offer. Take care, stay safe.

Re: Victorian Bushfires 2009 – Kinglake Rescue

Fantastic story Nina, put a smile on my face, I love your turn of phrase. You probably remember that, at the time a lot of the brigades around the area spent time working out of the Kinglake shed so in all likelihood it was the Wonga guys; I'll pass your message along to them.

Re: Victorian Bushfires 2009 – Kinglake Rescue

I have vague recollection of the Wonga crew coming to my rescue in Aitken Cresc a day of so after the 7th. A spontaneous really high fire erupted next to my gas cylinders and I knew I had nothing to fight it with, was too high and I was too frightened to connect my small generator to the pump as that was also next to the gas cylinders. I started running and yelling for someone to help, am very close to the CFA shed in Kinglake and it must have been a frightening sight for the poor crew to see this fat old biddy running up the road towards them yelling like a banshee. They ambled down to my place in the truck, gave me so much jovial stick and laughed at me because the fire had died down and was pathetic enough for someone to virtually pee on to put out. I'm sure it was a Wonga tanker but at the time things were so frantic for me, had just survived being trapped on the mountain fully believing I was to die after what I saw coming up the mountain with absolutely no way of escaping, it's like I'm suffering from some amnesia over certain things. I would like to thank the boys for being willing to help me, for making me laugh at a time when laughter was not the norm.

Re: Brew #2 – Boston Cream Ale

Hi Ally
If your Father-in-Law is an absolute first time brewer (which is the sense I get from your note) then I'd recommend that his first kit is something simpler that focuses on the bare bones of home brewing. The Boston kit is simple and easy but if he has never ever brewed at all then it may be slightly intimidating. Drop in to one of the Brewcraft chain of stores, they are in most capital cities and pick up a beer kit and ask them to recommend one of their Beer Enhancer kits. Normally with first time kit brews you use a can of concentrate and a kilo of white sugar (hence the term kit n kilo). The Beer Enhancer kits basically replace the off the shelf sugar you would have used and the end result is much better. Coopers also do a line of Brew Enhancers that are available at most supermarkets. So, in summary, you need a can of concentrate and a brew enhancer kit. This will allow your F-i-L to focus on the process of brewing, fermenting and bottling with little chance of error. The Boston kit is great and the end result is a big step up from standard kit'n'kilo brews but I'd leave that for a second or third brew.

Just to be sure (because you mention you are not familiar with home brewing) I wanted to clarify that the kits mentioned above are ingredients. Have you covered the need to have the hardware, ie the brewing kit (a big plastic container, airlock, paddle, tap etc)? If not, again drop into your local home brew shop, they will happily walk you through the options, it's not expensive.

Re: Brew #2 – Boston Cream Ale

Hi,
I drew my father-in-laws name for Christmas and decided to get him a beer making kit. I know zero about this and I believe it would be his first time making beer also. If I order the Boston Cream for 18.50 is that a kit and does it come with everything he will need except the Coopers Draught. Also, where do I get Coopers draught. Or maybe you think I should get a different kit for a first timer.

Re: The Session #26 – Rauchbier

Hi Dieter, thanks for dropping by, I think that I'd much rather the Rauchbier than the bushfire any day :-) You guys have a great site, looks like a busy brigade; I counted 8 appliances. I've been around this firefighting business for a while, now and I would like to publically reiterate the comments I made on the night. No matter how or why the situation arose, every individual involved performed magnificantly. The narrative you have provided here highlights the professional leadership and the professional firefighting skills you all demonstrated.
As for the "Hero" tag for the Wonga Park people, I think it fits perfectly. There must be something in the air at Wonga PArk, as I can remember being involved in a similarly brave episode 27 years ago with a Wonga Park crew under the leadership of "Scrubby" who was then a brand new officer. They breed them tough over there!!!
It all makes a bloke proud to be part of it, and even prouder to have friends of this calibre.

Re: Victorian Bushfires 2009 – Kinglake Rescue

Ester, apologies for the delay getting back to you, for some reason my blogs spam filter decided you were ... well ... spam :-)
I also found it amazing to go back and look at the pre-fire Streetview shots and it has helped me understand some of the things I saw that night with regard to the fuel loading and positioning of the truck after the crash. Firefighter safety is paramount and this was a negligent act endangering both the the warrandyte and wonga park crews. Cabin protection sprays are only ton be activated as a last resort in an entrapment situation, not as a first resort to enter into a firestorm. Didn't the FFA and their supposidly trained crews learn anything from the Linton tragady?

Re: Victorian Bushfires 2009 – Kinglake Rescue

I have considered doing some writing but there are a few things I am still digesting and am not quite up to putting finger to keyboard yet.
